Babylon Arch
Our Experience at Babylon Arch

Tired of the cold winter weather in Utah County, we decided to head down south to escape it for a weekend. Some local friends told us that we should check out the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, a favorite spot for locals that I had never been to before. And I loved every minute we spent down there!

The area is also known as Little Babylon, and it’s not hard to see why. The area is covered in reddish sand, with Mars-like geologic formations rising up all around you. But the highlight of the hike is the Babylon Arch. Honestly, I’ve never seen an arch quite like this one. It’s not particularly tall or wide, but it arcs right over the sandy trail. It just emerges from the sand on either side of you, and as you walk underneath it, you can see and feel all of the little pockets and imperfections of the rock.

Continuing down the sandy trail, we found ourselves on the top of a very steep hill, which led down to the Virgin River. One of us had packed a sled, and we had a blast flying down the hill. Fair warning, be prepared for sand in your face and an excruciating climb back up to the top of the hill if you do this. Hindsight is 20/20.

On our way back, we accidentally started following some side trails. It didn’t take us long to realize our mistake, as it led us right to a rather precipitous cliff edge. The area can be a little confusing, but just be sure to follow the trail with the heaviest tracks, and you’ll be fine.

This trail is fairly easy, but the deep sand can make the uphill portions a little difficult. If you have small children with you, they will likely need some assistance at these spots. This is a fun, beautiful desert hike that is definitely worth the drive. While you’re in the area, we would recommend checking out some of the other amazing, unique areas of southern Utah. Go to Zions and see some of the incredible sites there, or go bouldering in Moe’s Valley, right outside of St. George. Whatever you do, we hope you enjoy your time in southern Utah, and we would love to hear all about your adventures!
